Technical Documentation Specialist

Position Title: Technical Documentation Specialist

Department: Development 

Reports To: Manager of Business Affairs

Supervises: N/A 

FLSA Status: Exempt                

Shift: Day 

Work Location: On-site in Lake Mary, FL 

 

Position Summary: 

The Technical Documentation Specialist is responsible for creating, maintaining, and updating technical documentation for various products and services. The ideal candidate will have experience with automated documentation tools and processes, as well as strong writing and editing skills. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

The essential duties of the position include the following, and other duties may be assigned: 

  • Create and maintain technical documentation for various products and services, including user guides, installation guides, and reference manuals. 
  • Sound knowledge in API Documentation. 
  • Use automated documentation tools and processes to create and update documentation. 
  • Work with product managers and engineers to gather requirements and ensure that documentation is accurate and up to date. 
  • Proofread and edit documentation for clarity and accuracy. 
  • Collaborate with other documentation specialists to ensure that documentation is consistent across all products and services. 
  • Respond to customer inquiries about documentation. 
  • Participate in technical writing projects from start to finish. 
  • Stay up to date on industry standards and best practices for technical documentation.

Qualifications:

Education/Experience: 

A bachelor's degree in Technical Writing, Communications, English, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field is required. Strong writing and editing skills. Having experience with automated documentation tools (MadCap Flare, Chameleon, Product Fruits, Userpilot etc.) and processes that are specifically used in software companies would be considered a plus. A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in technical writing or documentation within a technical or engineering environment is required. Experience in collaborating with cross-functional teams, including product managers and engineers. A portfolio demonstrating successful technical documentation projects. Attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. 

 

Language Ability: 

Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos. Ability to write clear, concise, and user-friendly documentation. Strong proofreading and editing skills to ensure accuracy and clarity. Proficiency in technical terminology and the ability to translate complex technical concepts into simple, understandable language. Familiarity with industry-specific jargon and best practices. Ability to effectively converse and present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. 

 

Math Ability:  

Strong understanding of basic mathematics, including arithmetic and basic algebra, to accurately interpret technical specifications and data. Ability to understand and work with technical calculations, charts, and diagrams. Proficiency in using mathematical tools and software relevant to technical documentation. 

 

Reasoning Ability: 

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret feedback from non-skilled technical system users to uncover the source of problems and persistence to efficiently provide solutions. Extreme attention to detail is required to ensure proper documentation of facts. Ability to adapt well in the face of workplace stressors such as customer service complaints, maintaining the security of data, competing priorities of high significance to the successful function of the department.Strong analytical skills to gather and interpret technical information from various sources. Ability to identify inconsistencies or gaps in information and seek clarification. Excellent problem-solving skills to address issues that arise during the documentation process. Ability to develop logical and efficient solutions to documentation challenges. Ability to meticulously review and verify technical information. 

 

Computer Skills: 

Proficiency with automated documentation tools and software (e.g., MadCap Flare, Chameleon, Product Fruits, Userpilot
